Shawn Ballarin is an artist living in Lincoln, Nebraska. He received his BFA from the University of Nebraska and attended graduate school at Illinois State University. He works in a variety of media including painting, printmaking, video and bookmaking. For this show, Horizons and Patterns, Ballarin's paintings exploring the themes of travel, isolation and change through simple, sometimes primal subject matter. The work is a mixture between abstraction and representation and reflects on the idea of human tendency to find peace and beauty when faced with struggle.
Ballarin used a combination of painting and printmaking techniques for each work to build up the desired image and layers, allowing the surface to develop and then consumed the viewer in its patterns by asking them to look carefully at what else might lie underneath.
