Join us for the opening reception of Gary Bowling Paintings: Sun Screens, Friday, April 29, 5:00 - 9:00 pm with a Gallery Talk on Friday, April 29, 7:00 pm. Gary Bowling, a native of Missouri, is one of the Midwest’s most accomplished landscape painters. His work is widely collected with private and worldwide collectors and exhibited regionally, nationally and internationally. Bowling primarily works in oil, dedicating a great deal of time to each painting. His paintings are an exploration of light, shadow and atmosphere of the Midwest. With his painterly yet control brushstrokes and precise used of colors, Bowling has set himself apart from other landscape artist. His paintings place the viewer into the midst of the calming Midwest landscape.
Bowling currently resides in Lamar, Missouri. Early in his studies, Bowling intended to become an architectural engineer, but soon found himself more interested in the visual arts. After earning a MFA from University of Arkansas, he began teaching at Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa where he was Chairman of the Art Department for nine years. During his time at Westmar he moved away from early interest in conceptual art and began to focus on landscapes. Bowling left Westmar College in 1983 to pursue his paintings.
“My artistic interests changed dramatically over the nine years I taught at Westmar. Possibly because I found myself spending so much time in a basement office, my paintings evolved into an exploration of light and atmosphere and ideas associated with the landscape. I became particularly interested in the landscape as experienced from the highway, and features that suggested a demarcation between public and private space. More recently, I have been interested in the individual engaged by landscape and landscape as an expression of solitude.” – Gary Bowling
